Carl Theodor Luetcke was born in Hattingen, Germany in 1874 and appears to have emigrated to the United States in October of 1902. He signed a petition with other residents of Baltimore against the opening of a street through Hyde Park.
After passing the Abitur, he studies at universities in Strasbourg and Munich. He later teaches at the Quedlinburg Gymnasium and becomes the director of the Realgymnasium. During this time, he meets Paul Klee and begins an artistic collaboration with him.
