One-north is a 200 hectare business park, master planned and designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. It was conceived as a vibrant research and business hub that incorporates work-live-play-learn in its design to support collaboration and innovation, as well as the development of a new economy.
It’s a work-live-play-learn environment that fosters collaborative networks and collaboration across industries, research institutes and businesses alike. It houses public agencies such as A*STAR, MDA and SPRING as well as private companies to encourage collaborations.
The first of its kind in Singapore, Fusionopolis Phase 1 was launched in 2008. It features two-tower podium complexes, Connexis and Symbiosis, which house a host of institutes such as the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and Singapore Science Park. It also includes retail shops and housing units.
A thriving work-live-play-learn community, one-north is home to companies in the biomedical sciences, infocomm technology (ICT) and media sectors. They range from small start-ups to big tech giants.
Some of the largest names in the digital world have headquarters in one-north, such as Google and Shopee. Other stalwarts include multinational consumer goods company Unilever, with its Four Acres Singapore, and French video game developer ESL with its Southeast Asia headquarters.
Many of the buildings in one-north have their own distinctive identity. Those in the Biopolis cluster for example, have a green spine running through the centre of their premises, giving it a distinct visual appeal.
The green spine is an important part of the masterplan for one-north, and serves as a vital relief space for the communities living and working in the area. It also acts as a connector between the various developments within one-north.
Another part of the masterplan for one-north is Rochester Park, a heritage site that features several double-storey black-and-white colonial bungalows. The park was opened in early 2006.
This heritage building, which was a British military barracks for their troops, is now used as a home and work loft by a few residents.
The neighborhood has a number of other heritage buildings that have been preserved and refurbished for use as work lofts, homes and offices. A stunning one is the leadership development facility for global consumer goods company Unilever, which was set up in a beautiful black-and-white colonial bungalow in Nepal Hill.
A key feature of one-north’s design is the fact that it is surrounded by a plethora of social, cultural and recreational amenities. There are plenty of cafes, supermarkets and enrichment schools to keep everyone occupied.
There are also gyms and swimming pools that can be accessed by anyone in one-north. Fitness buffs can hit the road on the running track or head indoors to Fitness First at Fusionopolis, and Meraki Yoga at Metropolis, which has a rooftop swimming pool.
One-north is also home to a wide range of restaurants and dining options. If you’re in the mood for something romantic, Under Der Linden is a floral-themed restaurant that is inspired by medieval German poet Walther von der Vogelweide and boasts a modern take on traditional French cuisine. the hill one north
